Random Gathered Heading Curtains

What I like to call our romantic cosy fireside cottage window feel, perfect for a little Oxfordshire thatched cottage, with small windows, or farmhouse look, looks great on a pole, and also you can use less fabric than pinch pleat headings, and get away with 1¼ to 1½ widths per window side, and it still feels a fuller treatment,  you generally save yourself upto 3 mtrs of fabric per window over pinch pleats, I would say a popular default position for traditional Georgian , Victorian and Edwardian houses, if the rooms  are more town house style, and taller like in London, Central Oxford etc, then you need to upgrade to a deeper 5” heading, as the little 3” heading is perfect for most smaller houses, but could get a bit lost, its not a formal look, more an understated rectory/vicarage/farmhouse look, but we pull though our headings randomly, so they feel less contrived like machine headings all ridiculously uniform, it’s a soft friendly, welcoming  way of dressing a room , and works for county houses, and most guest bedrooms, if you have a few more formal dramatic reception rooms, or master bedroom, then you need to look at pinch pleat headings, cartridges and goblets.

Our Barn Showroom

Double Pinch Pleat Heading Curtains

Slightly more formal than single pinch pleat but less traditional than triple pinch pleat, (however I have done tripe pinch pleats in very modern settings and looks amazing, especially in plain silks or plain fabrics, which need a more interesting heading), also it just depends on the fabric as sometimes we use upholstery weight fabrics, and then the heading is better for single or double pleat , as the thicker the fabric the less you can do with it. Curtains made for a house in London below.

Triple Pinch Pleat Heading Curtains

For a more formal look, or higher windows, your default position drawing curtains/main reception rooms look, ours are beautifully made and hand stitched, having a real couture look and feel, again makes a plainer fabric more interesting. Pictures 1, 2 and 3 show triple pleat heading curtains made for a lovely couple, in a beautiful setting with gardens and lawns going down to the river in Henley-on-Thames, a nice sanderson country linen, in subtle creams , with a barn style versatile French grey washed pole and my favorite bee hive finials, a modern anchored calm country feel.

Triple Pinch Pleat Heading Curtains Henley-on-Thames

Pictures below show a triple pleat curtain made for a client In Henley-on-Thames, essentially a good heading for plain fabrics like silks, as gives interest, and anchors plain fabrics, and although a traditional finish, in a plain silk somehow looks modern, Chase Erwin Icelandic ribbed silk fabric.

Curtain £180.00+vat, lining, interlining, headings etc, £80.00+vat, 3 mtrs Icelandic silk fabric

Cartridge Heading Curtains or inverted pleat

A more modern look, as no pinches, and so less fussy, perfect if making up in really heavy upholstery weight or tapestry or heavy weave fabrics, a hollow tube can be fitted inside the cartridge to give a uniform cylindrical effect, or left floppy, which can be nice for an unconstructed look, and can then be dressed into a knife edge finish or rounded off, sometimes some fabrics down do what you want them to do, for instance a heavy Harris tweed once dressed isn’t going to change much but other thinner fabrics, don’t stay in a dressed shape and you find you are forever fiddling and reshaping the headings, so we tend to stuff the cartridge with Dacron wadding to help keep a shape without being as uniform as the hard cylinder tube look, but essentially a very versatile modern heading, with lots of options.

Pictures below – a scattered bay curtain set with tube cartridge headings in a heavy fabric we made for clients in Oxford, French stripe really heavy rustic linen from Provence, Heavy wrought iron bay pole made specially (not hollow).

Soft Applied gathered pelmets

I love this design, as its attached to a normal pair of gathered headed curtains, and just gives so much more interest, it is a cottage look, works wonderfully on a pole, but I think because of the applied pelmet, it can be used for grand effect in taller rooms, again it’s such a country house staple, to achieve that impressive feel, but at the same time still feel soft and understated.

Soft Pelmet Curtains

A pretty set of applied soft pelmet curtains , to give a French farmhouse feel, using French countryside floral linen, and French blue edging.

Soft Gathered Pelmets

An old farmhouse in Ipsden, in cheerful farrow and ball babouche yellow distemper walls, a large room with oak panelling and a grand piano and two fireplaces, the curtains are in colefax and fowler, viviers, one of my favourite designs, sort of 1930’s feel, and in this case set against parquet flooring and contemporary paintings for an artistic feel.

Cottage soft gathered pelmets

Pelmets are a useful way of hiding a track , also if there are any step up or step down features into a dormer space you can hide them, the only alternative is a board and fascia, which can cover/conceal the track, sort of, but thein it’s a hard line, against soft curtains, and so soft gathered pelmets work well in most settings, unless you want a more masculine feel like a gentleman’s study, club feel, then a covered board and facia looks good, the only thing I feel is a covered board looks like you cant afford a pelmet, so its probably better to go for a pole, if you don’t like pelmets, so much, however poles don’t work everywhere and for small cottage windows, if you want to create that farmhouse cottage feel, soft gathered pelmets work really well, and you end up with a very cheerful cosy feel.

Bay Windows

These are quite hard to get right partly because visually you are looking at the curtains in a distorted way as side on not flat, like a normal window, a large bay is fantastic for a scattered set of curtains, that definatly works , and they need properly dressing for effect, but try that in a small bay and its overkill, likewise if you have a small to medium box square bay and try finishing the curtains outside the bay on the return that can feel like too much fabric, as the sheer distance the stacked up fabric has to travel to the start of the actual window, can look overwhelming, but finished inside the bay and it can feel too squashed in, so you want to take the curtains past the window to the edge of the recess, but not return, I really recommend just a set of dress curtains and working romans for the bay windows, or just romans into a bay, then the trouble with romans is if you cant get them up high enough you loose light and its as if your windows have lost the top third of them, so basically as a rule of thumb, scattered sets for large five sided bays and just a pair of curtains for smaller bays and box bays, and if there is enough height then do dress curtains with roman blinds.
